Oscars 2014 Best and Worst Dressed

The most important evening in the film industry, every star in Hollywood was out in their glad rags last night at the 2014 Oscars. Inside the auditorium there were worthy wins and daylight robberies as the Academy gongs were handed out to Blue Jasmine's Cate Blanchett, with Dallas Buyers Club co-stars Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey picking up Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor awards respectively. But what happens on the red carpet is judged on a strictly sartorial basis. Here are the Blog on the Rails best and worst dressed of the night:

#5: Julia Roberts

The August: Osage county star went too black and too frilly with this peplum gown, but after the recent family tragedy of her sister's overdose, Julia probably wasn't feeling light a bright colour for her first appearance... but that doesn't make this dress any better.

#4: Pharrell Williams

After Pharrell's ridiculous Vivien Westwood hat at the Golden Globes, and even stranger attitude at the BAFTAs, he turned up last night fresh from school in a pair of Lanvin tuxedo shorts, his school shoes, and his dad's bow tie. Pharrell is making really catchy tunes at the minute but to be honest I'm sick of him.

#3: Sarah Paulson

I can see that sleeves have somehow crept their way in to this year's obvious Oscars nude trend, but where is Sarah Paulson in all of this? Oh there she is, far right, a blatant sleeve offender. The three quarter length hair and three quarter length sleeves have left her three quarters of the way up the worst dressed list, looking frumpy at number three.

#2: Chrissy Tiegen

This Monique Lhuillier dress doesn't do it for me. It's not an appropriate print for the awards, it's this weird dark shade of brown and it's just erratic and cheap looking and generally messy. No no.

#1: Penelope Cruz

What the hell, Penelope? Here she is trotting down the red carpet in an over-draped sack from Giambattista Vali. I don't even need to show a picture of the front because the back speaks for itself, but instead here's a picture of how this look should be executed, on Matthew McConaughey's wife Camila Alves in pale pink Gabriela Cadena:

#5: Jared Leto

The 30 Seconds to Mars singer managed to combine Hollywood glamour with his rock star side in this Yves Saint Laurnt black and white tuxedo and bow. I love it all and FYI I'm still not over the ombre hair. It will always look beautiful on him!

#4: Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock kept it classy in a deep midnight Alexander McQueen. The Gravity star has been experimental with fashion lately and I'm loving it; it doesn't always work, but the effort is commendable, and this look is so gorgeous on Sandy.

#3: Cate Blanchett

Blue Valentine star and winner Cate Blanchett looks beautiful in nude Armani, providing the perfect chic follow up to her string of awards season fashion hits this year.

#2: Kate Hudson

Kate Hudson in Atelier Versace is killing me. This is strong, sexy, feminine, structured but with a freedom and a throwaway, old-Hollywood effortlessness that is pitch-perfect for a night like the Oscars. This also has shadows of Goldie Hawn about it which I love, love, love.

#1: Lupita Nyong'o

This pale "Nairobi" blue custom Prada gown, complete with Fred Leighton headband, made 12 Years A Slave actress Lupita Nyong'o every bit the Disney princess. I love how fresh and young and sweet it is in comparison to the sexy and super bold red cape from the Globes. It's fun seeing so many sides of her style so early in her career, especially when everything she wears is chic as hell. For the second time this year, Lupita is our fashion winner numero uno!
